Just about 3.5 hours from Lisbon, tucked away in the Serra da Estrela mountains, lie two charming villages that feel like well-kept secrets: Valhelhas and Folgosinho. We spent a spring weekend exploring the area — enjoying great food, fresh mountain air, and the quiet beauty of central Portugal.

Valhelhas: riverside serenity and local charm
Our first stop was Valhelhas, a peaceful village set along the Zêzere River. In spring, the landscape comes alive with vibrant green fields and bursts of yellow wildflowers, creating a postcard-perfect setting. It’s the kind of place where time slows down — ideal for riverside walks, a nap under a tree, or simply soaking in the sounds of nature.
One of the highlights of Valhelhas is its river beach (praia fluvial) — with clear, refreshing water that’s perfect for swimming during warmer months. Even in late spring, it’s tempting to dip your feet in.
For lunch, we stopped at Valhécula, a cozy local restaurant that surprised us with its warm service and delicious homemade food. Expect regional dishes cooked with love and generous portions that leave you smiling.
Folgosinho: mountain views and rustic hospitality
From there, we headed to Folgosinho, a picturesque mountain village with panoramic views that make the journey more than worthwhile. We checked in at Hotel Restaurante Albertino, where we had dinner and spent the night. The dinner was fantastic — hearty, traditional mountain cuisine served with genuine hospitality. The atmosphere is informal, welcoming, and authentically local.
Folgosinho itself is full of character, with cobbled streets, granite houses, and a small stone castle at the top of the village offering sweeping views over the hills. It’s the kind of place that feels untouched by time, where silence is part of the charm.
Spring in Serra da Estrela: wild colors and peaceful vibes
Spring is an incredible time to visit Serra da Estrela. The hills are painted in lush greens and yellows, the air is crisp and clean, and the rivers and streams run strong and clear. River beaches, like the one in Valhelhas, start to come alive, offering peaceful spots for a swim or a picnic.
Travel tip: If you’re looking for a quiet weekend away from the city — full of nature, hearty food, and authentic Portuguese villages — Valhelhas and Folgosinho are the perfect duo to explore.
Whether you’re chasing wildflowers, mountain views, or just a bit of peace, this region offers it all. 🌼🏞️
