There are trips that stay with you. And then there are trips that change the way you see the ocean. Our week at Ecoboo Maldives was the second kind — and if you’re considering the Maldives, let me tell you why this small eco-resort on Thinadhoo island deserves to be at the top of your list.

Getting There: Emirates, Dubai, and a Speedboat Worth Every Minute

The adventure started before we even touched white sand. We flew Emirates — still one of the best ways to reach the Maldives, especially if you can use the Dubai layover to stretch your legs (or grab some quick duty-free shopping).

After landing in Malé, came the part nobody tells you about: the speedboat transfer. Yes, it’s 90 minutes by boat. But here’s the truth — those 90 minutes were spectacular. Watching the water shift from turquoise to deep blue, passing deserted islands, feeling the wind in your face… it was the perfect prologue to what was coming next.

Ecoboo Maldives: The Resort That Doesn’t Feel Like a Resort

When we arrived at Ecoboo, the first thing that surprised us was the bamboo. All. Of. It. Over 8,000 bamboo poles to be exact. And it’s not just aesthetics — the entire hotel concept revolves around sustainability, carbon-neutral footprint, and integration with the local community.

But let’s get to what matters: this isn’t some impersonal mega-resort. It’s 40 rooms, all with balconies facing paradise, air conditioning (essential!), and that feeling that you’re actually on a tropical island and not in some generic hotel chain.

Our tip? Book the experiences package. Seriously. Best decision we made. All-inclusive with all excursions included — and trust me, you’ll want to do them all.

What Makes Ecoboo Different

1. You’re on a local island, not a private resort island

Thinadhoo is a real Maldivian island, with real people, local shops, and a completely different vibe from resort islands. You can walk barefoot around the entire island (yes, we did), explore the bikini beach that stretches along the whole coast, and have a much more authentic Maldivian experience.

2. The house reef is absolutely insane

Forget needing a boat to see marine life. The reef is literally in front of the hotel. We saw sharks (yes, sharks!), manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and an obscene amount of tropical fish — all while swimming from the beach.

A Week in Paradise: What We Did

Swimming with sharks — This was, without exaggeration, one of the most surreal experiences of our lives. Being in the water with reef sharks, watching them glide past just meters away, feeling the thrill mixed with absolute peace… there’s no photo that captures it. Every single day we swam with sharks. It became our new normal. And honestly? We miss it.

Snorkeling with manta rays — Watching these giant, graceful creatures swim beneath you is pure magic. They’re so peaceful, so elegant. Swimming alongside them was unforgettable.

Dolphins at sunset — We took a boat trip in the late afternoon and came across a pod of dolphins jumping beside the boat. The timing? Perfect. Pink sky, calm sea, dolphins playing… one of those moments that make the entire trip worth it.

Free diving the house reef — Every day after breakfast, we’d grab our snorkeling gear (free with the experiences package) and go explore. Every dive was different. Every time we saw something new. And yes, sharks. Lots of sharks.

The Food: Simple, But Satisfying

Let’s be honest — it’s not high-end gastronomy. It’s buffet style, simple, with chicken or fish options, rice, salads, tropical fruits, and desserts. But it’s good. Fresh. And they have vegetarian, vegan, and even gluten-free options (something we really appreciated).

Breakfast deserves a shout-out: continental spread with fresh-baked bread (the morning smell is incredible), fresh fruits, natural juices, and decent coffee.

And dining literally facing the ocean, watching sharks and rays swim by while you eat? Priceless.

The Staff That Makes the Difference

Luis (the manager who makes you feel at home) and the entire restaurant team who learned our names by day two.

We weren’t “room number 12.” We were treated like people. And that, in an era of impersonal resorts and mega hotel chains, is rare.

Practical Things You Need to Know

📅 When to go: We went in late March/early April (March 26 to April 2, 2024) and had perfect weather. Sun every day, calm seas, ideal temperature.

✈️ How to get there: Emirates is our recommendation. The Dubai layover isn’t annoying (it’s actually a good chance to stretch your legs), and the flights are comfortable.

🚤 Speedboat transfer: 90 minutes from Malé to Thinadhoo. Organized by the hotel, stress-free, part of the experience.

💰 Experiences package: WORTH IT. All-inclusive with all excursions is the smartest way to make the most of Ecoboo.

👟 What to pack: Reef-safe sunscreen, light clothing, swimsuits (multiple!), snorkel mask if you have your own (but they provide), and honestly… you can leave shoes at home. You’ll be barefoot 90% of the time.

📱 Internet: Free WiFi and it works well. We managed to stay in touch with family without issues.

Would We Go Back? Without a Doubt.

Ecoboo Maldives isn’t for those looking for a luxury resort with sophisticated spas and five gourmet restaurants. It’s for those who want to experience the Maldives — swim with sharks, fall asleep to the sound of waves, walk barefoot on an island where everyone knows your name, and completely disconnect.

If you’re looking for authenticity, sustainability, and an experience that goes far beyond pretty Instagram photos (though you’ll take plenty of those too), Ecoboo is the right place.

We’re already planning to go back. Are you? 🦈🌴
